The Detroit Lions Can’t Shake Their Losing Ways

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

The Lions once again succumbed to themselves, as they had missed opportunities, a costly turnover, and way too many penalties that cost them another game, losing 19-35 to the Dallas Cowboys.  The Lions and Michigan State Spartans have frequently struggled over the years in similar capacities.  Both teams have often found ways to lose games, consistently have issues with discipline, make their opponent look better than they are, almost always have a poor secondary and in general have been surrounded by a losing culture.  Over the course of the last 4 years the Spartans football team has slowly transformed their identity into a gritty team team that has found new ways to win games.  This season have gotten it together and maintained it for the bulk of their season.  In games against the Northwestern and Purdue where they had no business winning a game, they were able to piece together just enough plays to win those games.  The Spartans have found the right coach and have targeted the correct players to make their systems work.

Unfortunately the Lions latest regime is seemingly falling into the same pattern of their predecessors.  The Lions still don’t have the personnel and have struggled with injuries, but few players are making attempts to create their own luck and even fewer players seem to believe they are on the right track to winning.  Good teams usually only require one good play to turn their fate around, but like most bad teams, the Lions have perfected one bad play or call ruining their chances of winning.  Obviously this could be cruel season filled with growing pains and horrible injuries, but it could also be the beginning of the end for the Schwartz era.  The Lions losing culture is still very much alive, and the team seems to have no answer in sight.

The Detroit Lions Are On the Hot Seat

Last season much of this team got a free pass as the Lions licked their wounds and attempted to recover from the first winless season in NFL history.  However this season the team was supposed to show signs of improvement, yet despite being in games they are still a dismal 2-7.  There is no doubt that the injury woes of quarterback Matthew Stafford have stalled this team, but that doesn’t keep the rest of the team(players and coaches) from being held accountable.  If nothing else the Lions have proved they can hang with their opponents and even run a very efficient two minute drill offense, but playing conservatively until the fourth quarter isn’t working.

Whenever a new regime of coaches and players roll into town they preach how they are going to change the team’s mind set and demand 110% from the entire organization.  Unfortunately most of this energy gets lost as the losses add up.  For the rest of the season it’s time fans, players, coaches, and ownership to start demanding more.  Every team in the league, dysfunctional supporter, coach and player are aware of the Lions flaws, yet come Sunday they are let off the hook for another loss simply because they are the Lions.  I think it’s fair to say the honeymoon is officially over for coach Schwartz and his staff and no player is safe on this roster.

It all starts with coach Jim Schwartz, who must improve his clock management, overall control of the team and motivate his team to play with more desperation.  The co-ordinators also have work to do as defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham needs to find a way to teach his team how to tackle and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan has to become more aggressive and creative with his play calling.  It is essential that  all the players focus on not committing such stupid penalties and play as though their NFL careers depend on it.  Finally the fans must lay off the team’s potent kool-aid, only sipping after every solid play or game they win instead of their usual gulps.

This team is once again at a crossroad and if they cannot finish this season strong their is no reason to keep any of the players or coaches around.  Cleaning house with the coaches gutting the roster, and trading away an asset such as Calvin Johnson must be considered to finally rebuild this pathetic excuse of a franchise.

The Detroit Lions are predictable and unbelievable at the same time, not sure how that’s possible but they make it work.  Scratch possibility #2,120 off the list of possible ways left to  lose a football game as the toothless Lions managed to pull within a two point conversion of tying the game in the closing seconds only to see Shaun Hill make a terrible pass attempt to end the game.  After today’s loss the Lions now stand alone in the record books for most consecutive road losses in a row with 25, breaking their own record of 24.

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

There were many reasons for the Lions to lose this game, there inability to take advantage of league’s worst run defense, numerous dropped passes, too many missed tackles to count,  compiling 11 penalties for 60 yards, or allowing Fred Jackson to run rampant for 133 yards and a touchdown.  Despite their shortcomings they were still in this game.  Quarterback Shaun Hill did an admirable job once again, but he also proved he is simply not a franchise quarterback as he struggled to make big plays until the very end of the game.  It’s no secret the Lions lack depth and overall talent to compete with contenders, but when facing off against a team with less talent than they have they still come away looking like the inferior team.

This team has done a fine job of fooling their supporters into thinking they were finally ready to restore the roar as they continue to find ways to lose and take steps backwards.  Once again this is another game where the Lions walk away with more questions than answers, can they even beat the hapless Cowboys next week?  The tough times continue for the Lions with the end in sight.

*Here is the box score of today’s game.

Kickoff: 1pm at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, New York

Date: Sunday November 14th

TV/Radio: Fox /97.1 FM(listen live)

Line: Buffalo -3

Spotlight on the opponent: The Bills are the last remaining winless team in the NFL, despite numerous close games.  Similar to the Lions the Bills have been stuck in rebuilding mode for quite some time.  Recently their offense has gotten a major boost from backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who has compiled just under 1,500 passing yards and 13 touchdowns over the last 6 games.  Fitzpatrick has developed quite the chemistry with wide receiver Steve Johnson ( 41 receptions 6 touchdowns) which has drastically improved their passing game.

Top reasons the Lions will win:

1.) Lions Ferocious Defensive Line-

This unit has done an amazing job of putting consistent pressure on the quarterback and forcing quarterbacks into bad decisions.  Despite Fitzpatrick’s solid play, he has been vulnerable to poor decisions.  Forcing turnovers and creating more opportunities for the offense is a must for the defensive line and would go a long ways toward helping the Lions break their 24 game road losing streak.

2.) Get the Running Game on Track-

Jahvid Best has struggled to make an impact within the Lions offense after getting off to such a hot start.  Facing off against a poor Buffalo run defense might be just what he and the Lions need to break out of their funk.  It will be crucial for quarterback Shaun Hill to not be forced into another game of a one dimensional offense, and Best has the ability to create explosive plays with the running game.

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

3.) Calvin Johnson-

Since Matthew Stafford cannot stay healthy to take on the role of the face of this franchsise the time is now for Johnson to put this team on his back.  This team is desperate for a win and is looking for inspiration, Johnson can and has to be that be that guy.  He has bounced back this season and has become their go to player on offense, this isn’t a big stage, but the Lions can’t afford to lose this game, and Johnson must have a big game (and not just because he is on my fantasy team).

Top reasons the Lions will lose:

1.) Bills Aerial Attack-

If the Lions defensive line cannot supply enough pressure, Fitzpatrick has weapons in wide receivers Lee Evans and Steve Johnson that could allow him to have a field day against the Lions secondary.  The Lions have been vulnerable to the deep pass and both receivers have speed and big play ability to keep them in this game.

2.) Spiller and Jackson-

The Bills entered this season with the thinking that their running game would be a major strength considering their depth.  After trading Marshawn Lynch they aren’t as deep, but it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see the Lions allow Spiller and Jackson to have career days.

3.) Bills Take Advantage of Playing the Lions-

No team is better at turning wins into losses, if the Bills can keep this game close the Lions just might find a way to blow it.

Prediction: Detroit 24 – Buffalo 17

Since both teams will be desperate for a win, it should create a competitive and hard fought game.  Both teams have similar short comings , but the key difference will come down to the Lions playmakers on the defensive line and offensive studs Calvin Johnson and Jahvid Best.  Suh, Vanden Bosch and company have done an amazing job of creating turnovers and making masking the Lions poor secondary, I expect them to make life miserable for Fitzpatrick and force him into turnovers that decide this game.

It has been reported by Mlive’s Tom Kowalski that preliminary test indicate that Matthew Stafford has a Grade 3 separation of his right shoulder, which will likely end his season.  The Lions have not released their findings from the MRI Stafford took on Friday, and he plans to consult with renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews(last guy you ever want to hear your star player talking to) before making any decisions.  However it’s bad enough to hear that Stafford may be lost for the season, but it is even worse to speculate that despite his immense talent he may be too fragile (he must be Italian) to ever be the Lions franchise quarterback.

JULIAN H. GONZALEZ / Detroit Free Press

In just under two games Stafford had displayed noticeable improvement from his rookie season with improved accuracy and decision making skills.  The Lions also play with a swagger when Stafford is in the lineup, but if he can not stay healthy this progress is irrelevant.  Unfortunately  the main stat that will be use to describe his career thus far will be that he has played in 13games and has missed 11 games (and counting) due to injury.  Whether Stafford is lost for the season or not, it will be impossible for him to shake the title of being injury prone now.

In the past the Lions have struggled to accurately identify quality talent (simply not fair, Lions fans had to suffer through watching these terrible QBs for years) in the quarterback position, but that hasn’t/wasn’t the case with Stafford.  Although he has only 13 games on his resume he has displayed the talent and moxie to be a star QB in this league.  It would be nice to keep categorizing his injuries as freak accidents, but the end results are if he isn’t injury prone than he is very unlucky.  It will take an extra heavy dose of Lions kool-aid to get fans reinvested in this team now as Drew Stanton takes over at QB.  This was supposed to be a season the Lions would use to build their way out of the NFL’s cellar, but now they must try to simply survive the season.  The Lions have a long history with a tortured past, and instead of Stafford being the player to lead them out of their gloom, he currently appears to be another victim of their twisted fate.

The Lions sure know how to break their fans hearts, more often than not it appears this team is determined to find new ways to lose, opposed to discovering any way to win.  They appeared to be up for the task of completing an upset as got off to a great starting scoring a touchdown on their first drive of the game.  Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford led an 11 play drive to ended with him finding tight end Bradon Pettigrew in the end zone, and a 7-0 Lions lead.  Meanwhile the Lions defense forced the Jets to punt their first four drives until eventually allowing them to put up 10 points before half time.

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

Although the Lions were losing at the half and had failed to produce another scoring drive in the first half the game was theirs for the taking.  The defense responded to open the half by forcing a Braylon Edwards fumble.  The Lions made the most of the turnover by putting together a drive that led to a 1 yard touchdown run from Matthew Stafford.  However the touchdown was made most possible by a roughing the kicker penalty which knocked Hanson out of the game.  Since Hanson was out the Lions turned to, wait for it, Ndamukong Suh!?  Oddly enough he was their answer to kick the ensuing extra point, but the big fella clanked it off of the right post (video here).  Although he missed, pretty impressive attempt all things considered, but it does beg the question how bad is punter Nick Harris at kicking extra points?

The Jets drove the ball down the field on their next drive, but the bend but don’t break defense came up with another play as Alphonso Smith (6th INT in last 5 games) intercepted a Mark Sanchez pass at the 1 yard line.  Unfortunately the Lions were not able to make the Jets pay for their mistake and punted the ball away on their next drive.  The Lions defense forced another punt (7 on the day) and gave the offense the chance to build on their lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Stafford and company answered the bell as the directed a 9 play drive that ended with him finding Nate Burleson for the 2 yard score, 20-10 Lions.

Neither team was able to move the ball on their next two possessions, but the Lions were dealt a game changing blow as Matthew Stafford went down hard yet again on his throwing shoulder.  He would have to leave the game and would not return, his current status is unknown.  The Jets got the ball with under 7 minutes to play and down 10 points.  Despite losing Stafford the defense had played well enough that a Lions victory seemed likely.  However the Lions cruel fate would prevail yet again as the Jets would put together 10 points to force over time.  As expected the Jets would win the coin toss and drive down the field and kick the game winning field goal.

While the Lions can take many positives away from this game, these heart breaking defeats have to be taking their toll on their confidence.  It would be easy to blame the missed extra point by Suh, Stafford’s injury, Stanton’s inability to complete an easy pass, or Calvin Johnson being shut down by Revis Island but this was a good that good teams find a way to win and bad teams find a way to lose.  This is nothing new for the Lions, but are the on the cusp of turning their misfortune around or are they simply a one trick Lion only capable of finding new ways to lose?

Kickoff: 1pm at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan

Date: Sunday November 7th

TV/Radio: Fox /97.1 FM(listen live)

Line: New York -4

Spotlight on the opponent: The Jets have talked the talk and walked the walk as they still stand as Super Bowl contenders.  Despite being shut out last week the Jets have an electric offense that should put up points on the Lions.  This game will allow Sanchez and Stafford to be compared( Stafford was the 1st overall pick and Sanchez was the 4th pick two years ago) despite the disparity in teams.  Although the Jets have one of the top running games in the league this game will be focused on quarterback play.

Top reasons the Lions will win:

KIRTHMON F. DOZIER/ Detroit Free Press

1.) Calvin Johnson-

His trip to ‘Revis Island’ is a major factor in drawing lots of attention to this game.  Johnson is establishing himself as one of the top five receivers in the league and Revis is arguably the best cornerback in football.  In some ways this will be a nice change of pace for Johnson as he will likely see man to man coverage for the first and only time this year, so he will have ample opportunity to prove himself.  If he can managed to be productive against Revis it will force the Jets defense to put more attention on Johnson and open up the field for the rest of the offense.  As Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reported Rex Ryan saying: “He is a premier receiver,” Ryan said. “It should be illegal to have a guy that big and fast and talented.”, lucky for the Lions he’s on their team.

2.) Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Company-

The Lions defensive line looks to continue their outstanding start against one of the best rushing teams in football.  Last week the Green Bay Packers did a fantastic job of eliminating the run and force Sanchez to beat them on his own, and he struggled mightily leading his team to zero points.  The Lions might not be able to shut down the run as well, but if they can minimize their impact their defense should once again keep the Lions in this game.

3.) Magic Matt #9-

Stafford will be under tremendous pressure this week, and will have to deal with the possibility of not being able to use his go to target in Calvin Johnson.  If Stafford can effectively spread the ball around between Burleson, Sheffler, Pettigrew and Best the Lions will be in a great position to win this game. While Stafford missed out on the match up against Bradford he will likely be eager to prove he is better than fellow first round QB Mark Sanchez as an added incentive to playing well in this game.

Top reasons the Lions will lose:

1.) Revis Island-

Darrelle Revis is the premier cornerback in the league today.  He has struggled with injuries this season, but last season he routinely shut down the leagues top wide receivers.  His ability to take Calvin Johnson out of the game will drastically limit the number of points the Lions will be able to put on the board.

2.) Jets Defense-

While the Jets defense ranks amongst the best in the league the Lions are catching them at one of the worst times, as this unit is at it’s healthiest since the beginning of the year.  The Jets may only rank as the 15th best pass defense, but they are ranked 3rd in the league against the run.  If they can fill running lanes and force the Lions offense to become one dimensional it will increase their chances of forcing turnovers and getting the victory.

3.) Mark Sanchez-

The blue print on beating the Jets was laid out to perfection by the Packers last week, it will be imperative for Sanchez to bounce back, and the Lions secondary should make life much easier for him.  However when the running game has stalled so has the offense, if he can step up without the aide of his running game the Jets could run away with this game.

Prediction: Detroit 24 – New York 17

Despite being less talented than the Jets the Lions have shown the character and resolve to play with any team on their schedule.  It will take an outstanding performance from the entire team, but i think Stafford will limit his turnovers and still manage to find a way to find Calvin Johnson in the end zone a few times.  Ultimately this game will be won by the Lions defense (who would have thunk it?).  The have consistently put heavy pressure on every quarterback they have faced and will continue on Sunday as they will force Sanchez into poor decisions that result in swaying the outcome of this game.

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is making quite the name for himself in Detroit, and is earning early attention for the NFL’s defensive Rookie of the Year.  Although the Lions only stand at 2-5 on the season the defensive line has put them in position to be in every game, and Suh has been a main contributor to this units success.   Suh has 27 tackles on the season, 6.5 sacks (7th in the league, 1st amongst rookies), has an interception, and returned this fumble for a touchdown on Sunday.  However despite his personal accolades when talking with the Detroit News’ Bob Wojnowski he quickly puts the focus on the collective job the defensive line has done:

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

“I think we’re an elite group (on the defensive line) that wants to continue to prove it,” Suh said. “I wouldn’t say it’s coming easy. I think I’m playing with a great group of guys, that’s what it is.”

As a unit Corey Williams, Cliff Avril, Sammie Hill, Suh and Kyle Vanden Bosch have been great, but there is no denying how quickly Suh has caught up and even passed his teammates.  After drafting Suh with second overall pick most felt he was a can’t miss prospect, but it was unclear how he would measure up or if the Lions would ruin him.  Veteran Kyle Vanden Bosch strongly suggests to Wojnowski that Suh is on the fast track to greatness:

“I hate to use superlatives, but (Suh) is one of the best in the game,” Vanden Bosch said. “He continues to make big play after big play after big play. All the pre-draft talk was, top-five or top-10 defensive tackles are busts. He broke that label pretty quickly. There’s never been a moment that’s too big for him. When the game is on the line, it’s almost easy for him.”

High praise from his teammate, but well earned at the same time.  Suh still has 9 games left to continue to dominate offensive lineman and pile on impressive numbers, and hopefully a few more Lions victories onto his rookie campaign.  The early numbers have Suh as the current favorite for Rookie of the Year and the Lions young nucleus of Stafford, Johnson, and Suh appear to have the talent to finally lead the Lions amongst the league’s elite.

Week 8 Recap-Washinton Redskins 25- Detroit Lions 37

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford played for the first time since Week 1 and helped lead the Lions to their second victory of the season.  Despite being blacked out on TV in Metro Detroit, the Lions rewarded the fans who attended with quite a performance from their three stars.  Matthew Stafford threw four touchdowns, Calvin Johnson had a career high 3 touchdown receptions and rookie Ndamukong Suh contributed 2 more sacks and iced the game by taking a Rex Grossman fumbled 17 yards for the score.  Throughout the game the Lions and Redskins continuously exchanged scores, with neither team appearing interested in taking over the game.

Although Stafford was noticeably rusty in the first half, the defense stood tall keeping the Lions in the game.  In the second half Stafford and the offense responded in a big way, compiling 30 points.  However no play was bigger than when Stafford converted a fourth and one by finding Calvin Johnson in the end zone for the go ahead score with 3 minutes and 12 seconds to play.  On the following drive the Lions forced the Redskins to turn over the ball on downs, and would add a Jason Hanson field goal to make the score 31-25.  The Redskins put their comeback hopes in the hands of Rex Grossman with under two minutes to play, but Kyle Vanden Bosch sacked him on first down forcing a fumble that Suh took in for the score, ball game.

This was the second straight victory for the Lions against the Redskins and could be the spring board they need to finishing their season strong.  There is nothing impressive about a 2-5 record, but the Lions have a favorable schedule that will allow the opportunity prove they are on the right track to finally being a competitive football team.  With Stafford, Johnson, and Suh in the fold there is potential for the Lions to make very big strides, making for exciting games that should include a few more wins along the way.  Stay tunes Lions fans, it may have taken 7 games, but the Lions season has finally started.

Kickoff: 1pm at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan

Date: Sunday October 31st

TV/Radio: Fox (blacked out in Detroit) /97.1 FM

Line: Lions -2 1/2

This week 8 match up has a rested Lions team facing off against a Redskins team determined to stay in the playoff picture. The Redskins will try to slow down the pace and grind this game out, while the Lions will be looking to air it out and let their offense put on a show.  Which ever team can dictate the pace will likely win this game, either way the score

Spotlight on the opponent: Donovan McNabb leads the Redskins offense and despite an uneven performance so far this season (completion percentage at 58% and 6 touchdowns to 7 interceptions) he still has the necessary ability to beat the Lions.  He will rely heavily on deep threat Santana Moss, his security blanket in tight end Chris Cooley, and his mobility to burn the Lions weak secondary.

Top reasons the Lions will win:

Daniel Mears/The Detroit News

1.) Taking Advantage of Offense Weapons-

He’s baaack.  With Matthew Stafford back in the lineup this offense finally has the opportunity to reach it’s full potential.  The Lions have vowed that their offense won’t change much with the return of Stafford, but one would have to imagine they will try a few more deep passes and the odds are greater Stafford completes a few.  The threat of being able to stretch the field more should help Stafford, and assuming he is healthy, should be able to pick off where he left off with the rapport he built with his receivers.  The biggest beneficiary of Stafford’s return should be running back Jahvid Best. While the Redskins will be focusing on Stafford it should open up running lanes and screen passes that will allow Best to take advantage of his speed.

2.) Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Company-

Suh and Bosch have led a surprisingly above average defense that has done an excellent job of providing pressure (the defense has 16 sacks) and forcing turnovers (15).  If these two can continue to make plays and clear paths for others (Corey Williams, Sammie Hill, and Cliff Avril) to make plays they should put the Lions in position to win this game.

Top reasons the Lions will lose:

1.) Hall and Haynesworth-

Last week this duo had their way with the Bears offense last week, granted it helped that Jay Cutler did his best Scott Mitchell impersonation and consistently thought Redskins cornerback Deangelo Hall was on his team (Hall had 4 interceptions).  Either way both players have the talent to make Stafford’s return a rough one.  When committed to playing Haynesworth can still be one of the elite run stoppers and pass rushers in the league, and Hall has the ability to be a shut down corner from time to time.

2.) McNabb-

Despite the fact that he is still learning a new offense McNabb still has the ability and weapons to lead the Redskins.  If McNabb has, or can buy, time to throw deep passes this team can put points on the board in a hurry.  Not to mention the steady running game they have developed with Ryan Torain can create quality play action plays as well.  McNabb’s skills have diminished, but he still knows how to win, and taking him lightly will be a mistake he will gladly make the Lions pay for.

Prediction: Detroit 31 – Washington 21

A break out game from Jahvid Best (90 yards rushing, 40 receiving and two touchdowns) and a stout performance will lead to the Lions second victory of the year.  While the Redskins are a solid team, they lack the offensive fire power to match the Lions. Since the Lions game has been officially blacked out it practically guarantees victory for this team, as they always seem to win when not on TV.
